I have always been fascinated with custom motorcycle and choppers. From an early age, I started a collection of revel chopper models. At age eleven I got my first mini bike, it was a mini chopper with a raked front end and a Briggs & Stratton 5 hp motor. I remember reading all of the custom motorcycle news from my dad’s subscription to easy rider magazine and being amazed at how grand and powerful the custom cruisers looked, and how each was so unique and colorful. I can also remember back in 1969, going to see easy rider three time I a row.
You might say that I have a passion for the individuality and uniqueness that is custom motorcycles. However, I do not have the mechanical abilities to build choppers and become one of the greats in the custom motorcycle world. So instead, I prefer to write and publish articles and custom motorcycle news about the greats, guys like Jesse James, Indian Larry or Mark Daily.

How a small town Alaskan woman is making her
mark in the world of custom motorcycles.
At age ten Christine Vaughan became
interested in motorcycling. Her first bike was a Suzuki RM100
and within a couple of hours, she tried standing up on the seat.
Thinking that her lack of fear would serve her better in an
organized environment, her Father signed her up for Racing.
Christine
eventually moved up to quad racing, and
then she became interested in street bikes.
Christine’s derives inspiration comes from the
women in her family. Christine puts it like this.
“Gender
blurring is a necessity in the Alaska bush – to
survive everyone has to be able to do the task at hand.
A stereotypical family could not function in the remote
areas of Alaska and it is more the women doing what
would be perceived as men’s work than it is the other
way around.If
you are female and your family fishes, you fish.The same holds true for canneries, logging and
even the oil fields.
I take strength in the fact that I can
trace my maternal roots back through seven generations.My Great-Great Grandmother ran a, lets say, “boarding
house” so the entrepreneurial spirit is in my
genes”.
It was out of
necessity that Christine learned to work on motorcycles.
Through out the history of the motorcycle there
have been but a few women that dared to straddle the haunches of
there own steel horse, until now.
Every year, more and more women are
coming to the realization that they can get off of the back and
get their own ride. Feeling more empowered today then ever
before, women are exchanging the back seat of their old man’s
custom hog for a sweet bike of their own. These women aren’t
the butch haired, tattooed
masculine stereo types of old. They are doctors, lawyers,
home makers, and teachers. They’re the girl next door or
somebody’s mom. They are women just like you. Women that have
come to the realization that they can learn to ride a
